Cataracts, a clouding of the crystalline lens of the eye, is the leading cause of preventable blindness in persons over 40 years old. Although 80 percent of surgery for cataracts occurs in patients over 65, 20 percent of surgery is required for patients under 65. Formerly the operation took over an hour, required hospitalization, produced large surgical wounds, and required many sutures (stitches). No stitch cataract removal is now one of the most modern surgical procedures. It is quick (10-15 minutes), efficient, painless, and does not require sutures. This speeds the recovery process and eliminates the nuisances associated with suture erosion and removal.
The technological advances that permit no stitch cataract surgery are a tiny incision, less than ¼ inch in size, through the edge of the clear cornea. Through this small incision, ultrasonic phacoemulsification with microsurgical instruments dissolve the cataract and allow it to be vacuumed out. Then, a soft, foldable intraocular lens is placed where the cataractous lens used to be allowing a clear focused light to reach the retina. A valve-like construction of the tiny surgical opening allows it to self-seal so that stitches are not required. Vision quickly returns to the potential of the eye, and limitations of activity are minor and brief. If their vision permits, patients can often return to driving and work within 24 - 48 hours.
There are options at the type of intraocular lens (IOL) implants available. Our surgeons offer all three Premium IOLs, the Crystalens, ReZoom, and ReStor and will help patients choose which lens is best their visual needs. See the IOL Counselor to see if you think a Premium IOL is right for you.
