Pre-Operative Instructions for Local Anesthesia Outpatient Surgery

WHEN YOU ARE SCHEDULED: Notify your primary care physician. Advise him/her you will be having eye surgery, e.g. cataract surgery. Also advise him/her that it will be an outpatient procedure under a LOCAL, monitored anesthetic. If there are any special considerations or restrictions, ask your doctor to call your eye surgeon. We typically DO NOT REQUIRE pre-operative lab tests since you will not have surgery under general anesthesia. For those of you undergoing an operation requiring general anesthesia, please refer to the attached sheet with your specific instructions.

MEDICATIONS: Continue all medications as normal. No need to stop any medications unless specifically instructed by your surgeon.

THE SURGERY DAY: Plan to arrive at the indicated surgical facility at the assigned time. Plan to be at the surgical facility 2 ½ to 3 hours total. Due to limited seating at the facility, we must ask that only your designated driver accompany you.

DISCHARGE REGULATIONS: Any patient receiving anesthesia/sedation MUST be discharged to the care of a responsible adult. This person must be able to sign that he/she will be responsible for accompanying the patient home safely. You will NOT be allowed to exit the facility by any form of transportation, including a taxi, city bus or senior residency bus, without the signature of a responsible adult.

EATING: Nothing to eat or drink 2 hours before your assigned time of arrival. Any meals prior to your arrival must be light. Avoid fried foods & citrus juices. If you are diabetic, take your regular dose of medication with your meal.

LADIES: NO EYE MAKE-UP & NO PANTYHOSE the surgery day. The surgeon will advise you when to resume eye make-up. Wear comfortable clothes. You typically will not be asked to disrobe for the procedure.

NO DRIVING: Because medications & sedatives will be used, you will not be permitted to drive after the procedure. Plan to have someone drive you home and to your post-operative visit the next day. Your surgeon will advise you when you may resume driving.

AFTER SURGERY: Typically there is little pain following most eye surgical procedures. However, we routinely provide a prescription for pain medication in case of discomfort. If you experience severe pain or nausea or any unusual situation, immediately call 210-614-3600.

THE DAY AFTER: Unless otherwise instructed, an appointment has been made for you in the surgeon’s office for a brief but very important visit. Instructions regarding the care of your eye, use of medications, etc. will be given to you during this visit. If there is any problem in arriving on time for this appointment, please call the office 210-614-3600.

** IF HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR PROBLEMS, CALL 210-614-3600 **
