Governor Perry and Mayor Castro Celebrate National Eye Donor Month: Flag Raising to honor South Texas Donors

The Donate Life America Flag will be raised in honor of South Texas cornea and eye donors. Showcased at the celebration will be Governor Perry's and Mayor Castro's 2013 March-National Eye Donor Month Proclomations. A balloon release, representing 7 EBAA accredited eye banks in Texas and Ice-Cream social to immediately follow the flag raising.

Highlighted Donor Family and Recipient Speakers include: 80 year old, Texas Renowned Artist and Cornea Transplant Recipient: Thelma Cardwell-Cale. Thelma's fine art has been displayed in the homes of two US Presidents and two Texas Governors. Donor mother, Kelli Schlueter, whose son, PFC Travis Schlueter, became a cornea donor after sustaining fatal injuries in a motor vehicle avvident with a drunk driver.

Cataract Surgery Reduces Hip Fractures

There’s good news for cataract surgery patients: If you’ve had cataract surgery, your risk of hip fracture is significantly lower following cataract removal.

In a US study of 1.1 million Medicare patients 65 years and older, researchers found people who had cataract surgery had a 16 percent less risk of hip fracture one year after the procedure compared to those who didn’t have surgery.

Hip and other fractures among the elderly are a major health concern, and poor vision is a leading cause of fall-related injuries, disabilities and even death.

The results of this study show that the benefits of cataract surgery go far beyond helping people see more clearly in everyday activities – cataract surgery also lowers the risk of potentially disabling fractures in the elderly.

The study was reported in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association).
